Project initiation can mean different things depending on the environment and situation of the organisation. We distinguished two main scenarios: an internal project, where a project starts with a new idea or a need, and an external project, which starts after a contract was signed, but that also means that a lot of activities already took place before.

Initiation covers the creation and review of plans (schedule, communication, staffing, risk, etc), securing the budget, activating staff. The last point is always a big challenge, as there is a strong competition for skill, be it in a small company or a large corporation. Initiation ends with a project charter. Stage gates (or phase gates) are formal reviews of the progress and - where applied - mark the formal end of the initiation step.
