Seven attended the Stammtisch that was held Strandgasthaus “Birner”, An der Oberen Alten Donau 47, 1210 Vienna. The topic of discussion was “Impact of culture on project environment”. Culture is multidimensional and a powerful force that influences how things are done. Understanding the cultural environment is critical to running projects and achieving the desired outcome. The national / regional / country cultural dimension can be seen for example when comparing Germanic and northern European disciplined approach to southern and central European event driven approach. The difference is also visible when comparing running a project in North America vs one in south America or south Asia. Understanding an organisation’s culture is critical to running successful projects. Culture resides in every part of an enterprise and it should be included in the onboarding process of new employee. For example running a project in a project oriented organisation like IBM or HP demands a different approach from managing a project in a start-up company. It was agreed that the principles articulated in this version of the PMBOK@ are good but there is no mention of culture and how it may impact project management.
